Time to bring out the big guns.

Kinja'd!!!

After showing up in three different Oppo music competitions the War of the Bettys is finally over. Ram Jam has successfully trounced Spiderbait for the better version of Black Betty, taking nearly two thirds of the vote. Arch Duke has recently been spotted !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! the results.

If you’re unfamiliar with Chuck Berry then you need to be ashamed. Grossly, massively ashamed. Go read !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , then thank him profusely for his part in giving us rock music. While early rock and roll existed before Chuck, rock and roll bands were almost entirely acoustic and utilized saxapones and horns nearly as much as the guitar. Chuck Berry, drawing from electric blues and specifically artists like T-Bone Walker, introduced the aggressive guitar sound, and the showmanship, to rock and roll, establishing the electric guitar as the genre’s centerpiece in the process. All one needs to do to see just how influential Chuck was is take a look at the artists who have covered this round’s song, “Johnny B Good,” artists like AC/DC, Aerosmith, Bad Religion, The Beach Boys, The Beatles, B.B. King, Bon Jovi, Buddy Holly, Carlos Santana, The Carpenters, Cheap Trick, Celine Dion, Elton John, Elvis Presley, George Thorogood, The Greatful Dead, Green Day, Hanson, Hendrix, John Denver, John Mayer, Judas Priest, Living Colour, LL Cool J, and Lynyrd Skynyrd.

...Meat Loaf, NOFX, Operation Ivy, Phish, Prince, The Rolling Stones, The Sex Pistols, Stray Cats, Twisted Sister, Conway Twitty, and The Who. It’s a good thing this isn’t a Battle of the Covers round, because there’s no way I’d be able to narrow it down to eight contenders. Instead we’re putting Chuck’s original up against a live version recorded in 1970 by one of the artists most directly influenced by Chuck Berry: Jimi Hendrix.

Chuck Berry - (1958)

Jimi Hendrix - (1970)

Dusty, Dusty, Dusty....

There are no “a”s in Lynyrd Skynyrd.

For shame!

Jimi knew how to play, no doubt about it. But this is Chuck's song, and I've never heard a version better than his.

Jimi never had the voice, but the shred was with him. Amen.

TL;DR - Chuck Berry is the Bill Cosby of music.

While both are terrible I’d say Bill is far worse.

I would also say Cee Lo is the Bill Cosby of music

Chuck. Really, most all of his early stuff is super solid and listenable in a way that many oldies aren't.

Together we would be able to answer all the useless trivia. That one didn’t stick in my head, and BTTF being my favorite childhood trilogy.

And by the way, you started something, and now you can nolonger stop it. I’ve been driving for 20 years now, and mostly alone in my car. That’s actually going somewhere if you are still reading.

So music, has been a major part of my driving experience. My music is mostly 90s music. Love music posts, even if it was to bitch Kayne on the FP yesterday.

To get back to the point, being a 90s teen then a young adult, growing up in the 90s everybody watched to VS shows on MTV, much music and musique plus here in Quebec. So music battles where part of music too.

I vote every Song Showdown post you make.

All this to say your posts are a part of Oppositelock, and will always be a home to them, as long as you keep posting them.

Some great comments over there

Chuck Berry didn’t break up the Beatles.

Also he doesn’t sound like a dying monkey getting fucked by a woodpecker.

Scott era AC/DC doing the song. Odd, but Angus loves it.

Chuck Berry FTW - listen to the “Live at the Fillmore” version from his hits album. The opening verses are guaranteed to put anyone “in the mood”!

I typically would vote for the original. But I had to vote for Jimi. Chuck just didn’t have a Strat and a Marshall stack.

But one thing for sure, rock and roll would not be the same without those two. Every endeavor needs leaders to go boldly where none have gone before, and that they both did. The foundation those two laid for the rest of rock and roll fostered thousands of rock and roll bands and songs that entertained millions.
